Our School in Our Community
At Crosscanonby St John’s CE School, we are proud to be at the heart of our local community. We believe that by working together, we can provide the best possible experiences for our pupils and contribute to our lovely local area. Our school is a community hub, and we are committed to building strong, lasting partnerships with local organisations, and residents.
We are grateful to our local community for the support they provide our school, and we work hard to give back.
We have strong links with Crosscanonby Community Centre and St John the Evangelist’s Church and work collaboratively with these when there are special events, eg: Christmas, Easter, VE Day and Remembrance Day. We, in turn, encourage community members to get involved in our school life. Our school hall is used for our local ladies community group meetings - this helps us to connect with a broader range of residents.
We love to celebrate the unique culture and history of our local area. Our curriculum includes projects that help pupils learn about their local community, such as:
- Our pupils have studied the history of the Roman fort in Maryport – ‘Aluana’ was a castrum or fort in the Roman province of Britannia and interviewed local residents about what life was like in the past.
- We try to take full advantage of being on the doorstep of the Lake District, with its glacial ribbon lakes, rugged fell mountains and historic literary associations – William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter.
- In Art lessons, children enjoy following the Lowry Trail, identifying the landmarks that feature in a number of his paintings.
We are excited to begin work to on our newly acquired allotment – donated to us by the Parish Council. Our allotment will offer numerous benefits beyond simple gardening. It serves as a hands-on outdoor classroom, providing practical applications for subjects like Science, Maths, and English. Beyond academics, an allotment positively impacts students' physical and mental health by promoting healthy eating habits, physical activity, and mental well-being. Finally, it helps develop essential life skills like responsibility, patience, teamwork, and problem-solving as students collaborate to care for their garden.
At Crosscanonby St John's CE School, we pride ourselves on having a brilliant relationship with our wider community. We enjoy participating and helping with local events, including 'Carols By Candlelight', the Remembrance Day Service in church and the community fairs that are held throughout the year.
In turn, it gives us great pleasure to welcome members of our community into school to share in our celebrations events - 'Carols Around The Christmas Tree', our cake sales for chosen charities and also to our assemblies.
