Our Weekly Update from Mrs Bowe...
14 February 2025
Good afternoon,
Happy Valentine’s Day! Valentine's Day is a celebration of love that originated as a Christian feast day. With love and care at the heart of our school’s Christian vision, I feel it is only right to acknowledge it and share the history of this special day:
“It is believed Valentine was a priest living in the 3rd Century at the time of the Roman Empire. The Roman Emperor - Claudius Gothicus - banned his soldiers from getting married, because he felt marriage was a distraction from fighting. But Valentine continued to marry Roman soldiers in secret.
When Gothicus found out Valentine was thrown in jail. The story continues that the jailer had a daughter who was blind, but Valentine was able to restore her sight by praying to his Christian God. The jailer released Valentine, but when Gothicus found out both Valentine and the jailer were sentenced to death.
On 14 February Valentine wrote a farewell letter to the jailer's daughter - the very first Valentine's Day letter.”
It has been a busy week in school this week. Our youngest children thoroughly enjoyed their trip, on Tuesday, to Maryport Lifeboat Station. They had the opportunity to sit in the Land Rover and the actual lifeboat itself!
On Wednesday, some of the children in Class 2 participated in a dodgeball competition at Netherhall School. Mrs Jenkins and Miss Baxter accompanied them and both said how proud they were of our children because of their excellent sportsmanship and the way they conducted themselves. Well done Class 2 – we are all very proud of you!
All the children really enjoyed their PE sessions with Coach Carl again this week. Hopefully we will be able to invite him back to work with us again.
Our half-term has ended with the most wonderful treat! Jenson’s dad very kindly visited us with his ice-cream van! We have all enjoyed ice-cream cones with sprinkles and sauce! Thank you so much ‘Tony’s Ices’ from all of us at Crosscanonby St John’s!
Please find below key dates for your diary for the week beginning Monday 24th February:
*Monday - Crosscanonby Baby and Toddler Group in the school hall - 1:30pm-3:00pm
*Wednesday – PE for whole school with Andy
*Wednesday – Multi-Skills After-School Club with Andy
Other after-school clubs will begin the following week – week beginning: Monday 3rd March (letter to follow).
Our Class Blogs will be updated by the end of today, giving you a more detailed insight into your child's week at school.
Thank you for your continued support.
Have a lovely half-term! I’m keeping everything crossed that the weather begins to warm up as we head into Spring and that the sun shines lots!
