What an amazing week we’ve had in school!

The children in Key stage 2 thoroughly enjoyed dressing up as Pharaohs and Egyptian men and women. ‘Tutantullie’ was mummified several times and then had the ‘Opening of the Mouth’ ceremony performed on it by 34 children! They learned about some of the important stages, including the removal of the brain and organs and the use of canopic jars, and why the heart was left inside the body. They also found out why jewellery was placed on the mummies before they were buried. As well as mummifying, the children enjoyed being archaeologists, learning about the past by looking at objects. They used tools to carefully trowel or brush the layers of soil away from the buried objects, looking for clues or evidence about how people like us used to live during the Ancient Egyptian times.

‘Mars Day’ was filled with exciting facts and activities, including designing and building their own Mars rovers to explore the surface of Mars. The children learned that the mission of each rover was to help scientists figure out whether water had ever existed on the planet. The rovers also searched for other signs that the planet might have supported some form of life. As a school, we discovered lots of amazing facts about Mars – we would need our ‘big’ coat on because the temperature on Mars is cooler than Earth, due to it being further away from the sun; the highest mountain in the whole solar system is on Mars and it is three times higher than Mount Everest and that Mars has four seasons just like Earth!

‘World Book Day’ was its usual fabulous self! Thank you for all the effort that was put into the children’s costumes. Characters in school ranged from Elmer, to an atlas, to Coraline, to Matilda – they were all fantastic! The staff costumes must also be commended! We had Winnie the Pooh and all his friends, Alvin, Simon and Theodore – the chipmunks, the Chuckle brothers, Little Red Riding Hood and Charlie Bucket! By bringing all these characters to life, we, as a whole school, have really highlighted the impact reading can have upon our lives. Thank you also to everyone who has sent photographs to their children’s class teacher showing how your child has ‘Read Their Way’!

Next Friday, the children in Classes 1, 2 and 3 will be visiting Brockhole in Windermere, where the younger children will discover the amazing wildlife that lives in the pond and learn about the life cycles, adaptations and habitat preferences of these amazing creatures, as well as exploring the wonders of the ancient woodland - from tiny insects to towering trees, through exciting activities and games. The older children will be inspired by the beautiful Lake District surroundings to engage their inner explorer and develop skills of orienteering, map reading, mountain safety and team work, as well as becoming geography detectives trying to discover why so many visitors come to the Lake District. We are keeping everything crossed for good weather. If you have not already done so, please return the parental consent form or email me to give your consent.
